What does IT consulting cost in the mid-market? The 2026 day rates, three billing models and how to spot overpriced advice

The short answer first: an IT consultant in Europe costs between roughly 700 and 1,500 euros per eight-hour day in 2026, depending on seniority. Developers sit at 805, senior developers at 1,192, specialists and IT architects at just under 1,500 euros; in infrastructure the range runs from 697 euros for support roles to 1,369 for project management and architecture. That is what the current Metrics benchmarks, based on closed sourcing contracts, report. For a mid-market company the more useful number is not the rate but the shape of the engagement, because the most expensive consulting is not the one with the highest day rate. It is the one that changes nothing.
This guide is written for the company buying the advice, not the one selling it. It covers what the benchmarks actually say, which billing model fits which question, and the three signals that separate a fair price from an expensive habit.
What the 2026 benchmarks show
The numbers below come from the Metrics benchmark, reported by CIO on 11 March 2026. They are drawn from closed client contracts across Europe, so they reflect what was actually negotiated, not list prices.
| Role | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Developer (3+ yrs) | 793 € | 805 € |
| Senior developer (7+ yrs) | 1,162 € | 1,192 € |
| Specialist skills / solution design | 1,571 € | 1,498 € |
| Infra skill 1: testing, onsite support | 712 € | 697 € |
| Infra skill 2: system engineering, consulting | 1,059 € | 1,065 € |
| Infra skill 3: project mgmt, architecture | 1,475 € | 1,369 € |

Two patterns matter for a buyer. First, the split direction: the top tier fell 7.2 percent in infrastructure and 4.6 percent in application work, the first significant drop in years, while the middle tiers held or rose slightly. Second, the cause: Metrics attributes the top-end erosion partly to AI tooling standardizing once-manual architecture and management work, and partly to cloud programs moving from expensive design phases into run mode. Strategy consultancies sit well above these figures; the Lünendonk skill-price matrix for DAX customers shows senior consultants between 1,300 and 3,820 euros a day.
The three billing models, and when each fits
The rate is the visible number; the model is what decides whether it was fair. Day rate is honest when the problem is still being explored, because you pay for the finding, not for a guess. Fixed price works when the scope is definable up front: an audit, a concept, a tender. Every fixed-price contract on an undefined problem carries a risk premium baked in, and you pay it invisibly. The hybrid, a few fixed scoping days followed by day-rate or milestone billing, is usually the pragmatic mid-market answer: it caps the exploration risk and keeps the execution honest.
What a mid-market project actually costs
Back-of-envelope for a typical engagement: a focused readiness audit runs three to five days at roughly 1,000 to 1,400 euros each, so 3,000 to 7,000 euros for a written, prioritized assessment. A strategy-to-roadmap engagement runs ten to twenty days, so 10,000 to 30,000 euros. Implementation support is where the meter really runs, and where the earlier piece on why 60 to 80 percent of IT budgets flow into legacy matters: the advisory line is small compared to what the wrong architecture quietly costs each year.
For sizing the wider envelope, our digital budget calculator puts the advisory line next to build and run costs, and the make-or-buy piece covers the adjacent question of when external help makes sense at all.
The honest remainder
Two qualifications keep this honest. First, the benchmarks are European means from negotiated contracts; a Frankfurt agency and a Munich systems house will quote differently for the same role, and rare specializations sit outside the band entirely. Second, a day rate tells you nothing about outcome. The Lünendonk market study for 2025 notes that German IT-services growth cooled to 2.6 percent, so providers are hungrier than in the boom years, which favors the buyer. But the measure that matters is not what you paid; it is what runs differently afterwards.
Whoever takes one sentence from this piece: budget for the decision, not the day. The question is never whether 1,200 euros a day is a lot. It is whether the answer you are buying saves more than it costs, and whether it arrives as a changed system or as a PDF.

IT strategy consultingFrequently asked questions about the cost of IT consulting
What does an IT consultant cost per day?
Per the Metrics market benchmarks for 2026, the European average sits between roughly 700 and 1,500 euros per eight-hour day depending on seniority. Developers are at 805 euros, senior developers at 1,192 euros, specialists and IT architects at just under 1,500 euros. In IT infrastructure the range runs from 697 euros for support roles to 1,369 euros for project management and architecture. Top-tier strategy consulting sits well above that.
Why are top-tier day rates falling in 2026?
Two reasons stand in the data: the highest skill tier dropped 7.2 percent in infrastructure and 4.6 percent in application development, because once-manual architecture and management tasks are partly automated by standards and AI tooling, and because the expensive strategy and design phases of cloud migration are finished at many companies. Meanwhile the middle tiers rose slightly, because reviewing AI-generated work itself demands experience.
Is fixed price or day rate better for a mid-market company?
It depends on the question. Fixed price works when the scope is definable: a concept, an audit, a tender. Day rate is more honest when the problem first has to be explored, because every fixed-price formula then carries a risk premium you pay without seeing it. For the mid-market the hybrid is often most pragmatic: a few fixed-price scoping days, then day rate or milestone billing for delivery.
How do I spot overpriced IT consulting?
Three signals: first, when the engagement only documents what you already knew. Second, when the deliverable is a report rather than a changed system. Third, when the rate sits far above the benchmark without a rare specialization justifying it. The 2026 benchmarks say: whoever pays over 1,500 euros a day for standard work should be able to demand a clear reason.
Is IT consulting worth it, or can we handle it in-house?
The math works when the outside view sees something structurally invisible from inside: grown dependencies, wrong prioritization, or a question nobody is allowed to ask. It does not when you are simply renting extra capacity; consulting is too expensive for that, that is what freelancers are for. The hardest currency is not the day rate but whether anything runs differently afterwards.
Sources, status and note: The figures were read at their primary sources, retrieved on 29 September 2026: the Metrics day-rate benchmarks as reported by CIO (11 March 2026) for all per-day rates and the year-over-year movements, and the Lünendonk market study 2025 for the market context and the strategy-tier range. The benchmark means are European figures from closed contracts; actual quotes vary by region and specialization. This is market orientation, not a price guarantee.
